Good Performances At Waikari Sports

Spectators were treated to some performances of high merit at the annual sports meeting at Waikari on Saturday when a varied programme of athletic, cycling, and national dancing events was provided. The decision of the Waikari Sports Association to alter the date of the meeting from late March-early April to November proved very satisfactory, resulting in improved entries and gate takings. Although most of the athletic and cycling events were conducted on a handicap basis some very good performances were recorded by the backmarkers. One of the best performances was that of G. Wilson in the 20-mile road race. Second in the Canterbury marathon title last season, Wilson finished full of running at Waikari to record his best time of Ihr 57min 20sec for the distance, an improvement of about a minute on his previous best time recorded in the Christ-church-to-Rangiora event. Two very encouraging efforts were achieved by two young runners having their first 20-mile run, second place being gained by I. Clifford, off 13min ahead of Wilson, with 2hr 13min. while D. Mackley was timed at 2hr 19min 15sec.

Good early-season form was shown by the Canterbury junior . high jump record-holder, J. Chad- . derton, who cleared sft Ilin for i third place in the handicap event. ' Chadderton cleared lift 6in in the ! pole vault, which he won with i a handicap performance of 13ft. Although second in both the 1 shot and discus for women. Miss Valerie Sloper had satisfactory distances from the scratch mark, with 53ft lin for the shot and 159 ft 2in for the discus. R. G. Ball In Form R. G. Ball, the Canterbury senior record-holder for the discus, shot, and javelin, was in good form for his first attempt with the shot for the season, and his 46ft Bin was only a fraction over lOin short of his provincial record and best performance. Ball met his match, however, in a duel with district competitors for the sheaf-tossing championship. After failing to oualify in the handicap event, Ball entered for the champion--1 ship event, and during the inter- . val between the two events had . some coaching in the mechanics of the event. After a drawn-out contest. Ball was relegated to a ’ worthy third behind J. Inch and ; D. Lang. ’ In the cycling events, two ’ North Canterbury titles were decided, with D. Swanson winning the mile cash title, and R. Fow- ! ler the two-mile amateur title. > In the national dancing competi- ‘ tions, Pamela Kinzett won the i sailors’ hornpipe under 16 pro- • vincial championship. A group of cyclists had the ’ disconcerting experience of having. the 161 b hammer soar across 5 their path when one of the athletic competitors let the weight 5 go at the wrong point of his turn. 1 T he Sutherland Cup for most points in the open flat events was won by B. McLean, and M O • Alford gained the Harry Saunder- ■ cock Cup for most points in the I open field events. ATHLETICS Inter-Club Events ”5 Yards. Women.—Heat 1 • G Phillips (10yds) 1, K.
