West Indies Scores 493 For First-Innings Lead

(A'.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

MELBOURNE, Nov. 20. The West Indies batsmen, with the right-hander, R. Kanhai, dominating, thrashed a Victorian State aide bowling attack yesterday to win a first-innings lead of 375 runs. Kanhai, batting on the slow pitch with masterful power and precision, scored 252. The last West Indies wicket fell 12 minutes before stumps for a first innings total of 493. Victoria had scored 118 in its first innings and were none for two when play finished yesterday. Australian critics today hailed the West Indies team, describing its batsmen as “incredible” and Kanhai as “exhilarating.” The West Indies score was only six runs short of the highest ever made by a West Indies‘team in Australia, in a match against Victoria in 1930-31. Yesterday, with Kanhai setting the pace for the first five hours of play, during which he per-

sonally added 214 run*, the team compiled 371 for nine wickets in 348 minutes.

Victoria’s main attack comprised four players who are candidates for the Australian team to tour England: the fast bowlers I. Meckiff and R. Gaunt and the left-arm spinners, L. Kline and I. Quick. Kanhai and the captain. F. Worrell. njade them look cheap, hitting the best balls to all parts of the held with merciless ease. Ovation for Kanhai The crowd was enthralled by Kanhai’* artistry. They accorded him an ovation when he reached his double century just before the tea break, and another when-he retired from the wicket after having been caught at mid-on, off R. Meckiff, whose first wicket was thus won wijh 104 runs against him. Kanhai was master of the attack throughout his five hours of batting today. He batted for 388 minutes and hit 26 fours. Kanhai was in three century partnerships: with C. Hunte (82) 142 in 134 minutes for the second wicket; with the left-hander, P. Lashley (36), 139 in 142 minutes for the fourth wicket: and with Worrell, 133 in 101 minutes for the fifth wicket. ' WEST INDIES x
