WOMEN’S MATCHES
Fine 85 Not Out
By
E. Woods
Matches in the women’s cricket competition continued in excellent conditions on Saturday. One of the best scores of the day—Bs not out was made by E. Woods (Western) in the match between Western and St. Albans. She was ably supported by B. Moore, who made 41. Mia-Moa v. St. Albans A The batting of J., Dalton in the match between St. Albans A and Mia-Moa was a highlight of the day. Not only were her shots forceful, but the running between wickets was first-class, and a grand example of how to score runs quickly. Her innings with L. Bayliss was one of shots all round the wicket with wellplaced strokes. L. Bayliss, although somewhat overshadowed, did well and showed a glimpse of form. P. Blackler was punished at times by Dalton, but never let up and took five for 76 in 24 overs, four of them maidens. The fielding of both sides was at times very poor. Mia-Moa declared with seven for 155. The St. Albans batting was far from, aggressive. B. Turner again reached double figures (18), and C. Randall top scored with 22. The bowling of L. Todd and L. Bayliss was poor, far too much being wide outside the off or leg stump, giving the batsman little chance at times of even reaching the ball. L. Todd took two for 20. At stumps St. Albans was 55 for three. The result was a drawn game. Western v. St. Albans B Western batted first and lost two quick wickets, but E. Woods, who has been off form for some time, got on top of the bowling and hit a creditable 85 not out. She was ably supported by B. Moore, who contributed a dashing 41. Woods scored all round the wicket with forceful shots, giving only one hard Chance to point, which was not accepted. H. Steere took most wickets with three for 15. Western declared with 155 for six. St. Albans began well, but with 17 H. Steere was bowled. P. Jarvis (19) and A. Colville (22 not out) kept out the determined Western attack. J. Wilson was the only other player to reach double figures, making 11. E. Woods, three for 5. and S McCaw, three for 33. were the main bowlers for Western. The fielding of these two teams was good without being outstanding. St. Albans at stumps was 104 for seven. The result was a drawn game. Representative Squad With T. Baker and B. Line unavailable, J. Cockel has been brought into the Canterbury women’s representative squad for .practice.
