Lawn Tennis N.S.W. SINGLES DECIDED
N. Fraser Beats B. Mackay (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, November 20. The Wimbledon tennis champion, Neale Fraser, reduced America’s Davis Cup hopes yesterday when he beat the top United States player, Barry Mackay, in straight sets to win the New South Wales singles championships. Fraser, who has been suffering from food poisoning for a week, beat Mackay, 10-8. 6-4, 7-5. His decisive victory appeared to be due mainly to his more reliable serve. Mackay’s thundering "cannonball” let him down at crucial moments. Fraser went on to the court with a doctor’s warning that he had to make sure of winning the match in straight sets. "I thought about that as I went on the court," Fraser said. "Apparently the doctor was not at all convinced that I could go four sets. But I had no trouble on the court, and felt strong at the finish.” Mackay, who beat Rod Laver in a five-set semi-final on Thursday, did not serve nearly as well yesterday as he did against Laver. "I still think Barry is capable of beating Fraser, but he will never win until he gets that service going,” said the American team mananager, Mr D. Freed. The Davis Cup challenge round will be played on December 26, 27, and 28. Fraser completed a double for the State championships today when he and R. Emerson beat Laver and R. Mark. 6-2. 14-12, 6-4, in the final of the doubles championships. Laver, who played poorly, injured his ankle in the last set. In the women’s singles final today J. Lehane beat the national champion, M. Smith, 6-1, 6-3. Smith later paired with M. Reitano to beat the sisters, N. and L. Turner, 6-3, 7-9, 6-2. in the women’s doubles final.
