Young Man Drowned In Floods Near Wairoa
(New Zealand Press Association) WAIROA, November 20. A young man was drowned tonight in a floodswollen stream in the back country of Wairoa. His body has not been identified. Heavy rain and strong easterly winds have lashed the Wairoa and Gisborne areas since Friday and rivers are running up to 18 feet above normal. All northern and western main highways are blocked. The southern route to Napier was blocked for a short period yesterday but is now open. Rail communications with Napier were blocked yesterday and again today but the line was clear tonight. Rainfall at Lake Waikaremoana tonight reached the phenomenal figure of 30 inches in three days.
