FALL FROM 9TH STOREY
Man Only Breaks A Leg (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 20. A man fell from the ninth floor of the Inland Revenue building, on the corner of Taranaki and Manners streets, about 8.50 a.m. on Saturday—and broke his leg. The man who had the amazing escape from death is Mr W. Poole, a serviceman fitter of Steven crescent, Porirua East. He received a fractured left leg, concussion. and shock. The Wellington Hospital has described his condition as fair. Mr Poole’s remarkable comparatively minor injuries were attributable to the fact that he fell on to the roof of Kenners. Ltd., a one-storey building, and his fall was broken. A foreman for Crittal Metal Windows (New Zealand), Ltd., Mr Poole was working on the building’s windows from scaffolding when the accident occurred. It is understood he was sitting on the boards of the scaffolding when he fell backwards. He made a desperate lunge at the scaffolding and succeeded in breaking his fall momentarily. However, he also crashed against a protruding tube of the scaffold. Mr Poole turned a complete somersault and landed presumably on the side of his body. He left a 2ft dent in the corrugated iron roof.
