More Opposition Questions On 1957 Election Promises

WELLINGTON, October 14. Opposition members today continued their questions to Ministers on various election promises made ty the Labour Party in 1957. This was the fourth such session this week. Mr D. J. Carter (Opposition, Raglan) asked the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Skinner) to what extent, and in how many cases, individual farmers had been assisted financially, and in other ways, to develop their own land to its full capacity as promised in Labour’s 1957 election policy. Mr H. Johnstone (Opposition, Waipa) asked the Minister in charge of the Valuation Department (Mr Fox) if the 1957 policy of “one system of valuing rural land for Government and local body rating and probate” had been introduced. Mr L. R. , Adams-Schneider (Opposition, Hamilton) asked the Minister of Customs (Mr Boord) if he would say when the Government proposed implementing Labour’s 1957 policy to “free from licensing essential imports and raw materials for approved industries.” Mr Boord asked leave to reply immediately to the question. He said that if Mr Adams-Schneider examined the import schedule and announcements he would see that the policy was being implemented. Materials for the essential fertiliser manufacturing industry had been freed from licensing. Mr P. B. Allen (Opposition, Bay of Plenty) asked the Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) to say what Steps had been taken “to arrange a progressive increase in
the rates of pay for women until ■ the ideal of equal pay.for equal ■ work under equal conditions for > men and women is attained” as t promised in Labour’s 1957 policy, i Mr D; M. Rae (Opposition, Eden) asked Mr Fox if, in ac- , cordance with Labour’s 1957 policy f he had yet carefully examined i the State housing accounts and , made “such adjustments as will ■ ensure that over-all capital, main- • tenance and service charges are I covered and that rents do not I exceed this level” and if he would . tell Parliament the result of his , findings. i Mr E. P. Aderman (Opposition, • New Plymouth) asked Mr Fox ' if all who had requested capitalI isation of the family benefit “for 1 the purpose of repaying an existI ing mortgage,” as promised in 1957, had been permitted to do ■ so. : Mr F. L. A. Gotz (Opposition, > Manukau) asked the Minister of ■ Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) if the ■ issue of an additional £45.5 niili lion by the Reserve Bank to the I State during the last 12 months ■ had caused some inflation. In a note to the question, Mr ’ Gotz said the Labour Party in ■ 1957 declared that, if it became ■ the Government, it would “take ■ the necessary steps to ensure that : the amount of credit issued would ■ not be excessive to the point of ■ causing inflation.” Mr W. B. Tennent (Opposition, ■ Manawatu) asked the Minister of Health (Mr Mason) whether the school dental service had been ’ extended to all young people up to ; 18 years of age as promised in • the Labour Party’s 1957 election . policy.
