HIGHER PRICES OF FOOD
Increases Listed By Mr Shelton (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 14. The “privilege” of having a Labour Government had cost New Zealand taxpayers £ll5 million more in taxation over the last three years than in the last three years of the National Government, Mr N. L. Shelton (Opposition, Rangitikei) said in the House of Representatives today. “It costs taxpayers £lOO,OOO a day and £B5OO every hour of the day for the privilege of having this Government,” he said. Mr Shelton was speaking on the annual Appropriation Bill. Mr Shelton listed a variety of household goods which had risen in price over the last three years. He said cough mixture was up from 2s 9d to 3s 6d since 1957, toothpaste from 2s 5d to -2s 9d, tinned peas from Is 9Jd to 2s 2d, spaghetti from Is lid to IS 3d, baking powder from 2s lOd to 3s Id, dried apples from 2s lid to 3s 6d and mixed cake fruit from 2s lOd to 3s 4d.
Increases in cosmetics prices included a rise in the price of fragrant bath soap from 6s to 6s 6d, talc powder from 5s lid to 6s 9d, and lipstick from 7s 6d to 8s 6d.
