M.C.C. TOUR OF N.Z.
Silk Tipped As Captain (NJ!. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 30. The "Dally Sketch" named the Cambridge cricket and Rugby blue. D. R. W. Silk, as captain of the M.C.C. team to New Zealand this year and also said he was not good enough for the job. One reason was that he had Played no first-class cricket this year. Silk, who is aged 28, captained the M.C.C. amateur team in Canada last year, and is on the Somerset list. He has never played tor England. The man who should have been chosen was the England selector, D. J. Insole, said the "Daily Sketch.” He had played for England nine times, and had also been vicecaptain of the test side. "The New Zealand trip is a vital one for England's cricket future.” it said. "Everyone hopes it will throw up a few youngsters who could help us win back the Ashes. "It is important that we have an experienced leader who is good enough to win the boys’ confidence as a cricketer. Dennis Silk is not big enough for the job." The newspaper said its disclosure that Silk was to he captain was an “inspired leak.” The team will not be announced officially until August 8.
