DRAW FORCED BY SURREY
Poor Gate For South Africa
(N2. Press Association —Copvrtght) LONDON, July 30. The South Africans* match with Surrey at the Oval ended yesterday in a draw after the tourists set the county the almost impossible task of scoring 183 in 89 minutes. Surrey, declaring 115 runs behind in its first innings, scored 52 for two after the South Africans had declared at 67 for four in their second innings. Frequent showers allowed only three brief veils of play in the morning, and Surrey added 40 runs in even time before Alec Bedser declared at lunch with the score at 233 for seven. His brother, Eric, was unbeaten in - scoring 67—his highest score this season. The South African pace bowler, N. Adcock, took five for 66. A. Pithey and G. Griffin had hardly opened South Africa’s second innings when Pithey was caught off Alec Bedser. The score was 0 for one. Griffin and J. Fellows-Smith put on 48 before both were caught off successive balls. A. A. McLean did not stay long, and, D. McGlew declared at tea.
The weather hit the tourists’ pocket badly. Only 6655 spectators paid to see the match. The South Africans’ share will be about £433. Scores:—
