REMINDER FOR COPETITORS
Amateur Status In Olympics (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) w PARIS, July 30. The International Olympic Committee, has urged the national Olympic committees to ensure that only amateurs are permitted to compete in the forthcoming Games in Rome, American Associated Press said. A letter to the committees signed by the 1.0. C. president (Mr Avery Brundage) notes that entries for the Games require the competitor to sign the following pledge: **l, the undersigned, declare on my honour that I am an amateur, and fulfill the conditions stipulated by the Olympic rules.” The letter added: “We trust that you will use the utmost discretion in signing these forms. “It has been alleged that there have been competitors in previous Olympic Games who were not eligible under the Olympic rules. If this is the .case, at least three people have made false certifications in each instance?* The I.O.CL’s rule on amateurism says: "An amateur is one who participates and always has participated in sport solely for pleasure and for the physical, mental and social benefits he derives therefrom, and to whom participation in sport is nothing more than recreation without material gain of any kind, direct or indirect.”
