10,000-METRE WIN

R. Bogey Beats Olympic Hope fN.Z. Pr*s» Awoctottow—Copyright) LONDON, July 30. France found a potential Olympic medallist for the 10,000 metres when its two-day match with Great Britain and Northern Ireland began at the White City today. R. Bogey won the 10,000 metres for France in the spectacular time of 29min I.6sec. Bogey, a 24year-old runner from Aix-les-Bains, running in only the second 10,000 metres of his career, best J. Merriman, of Wales, one of Britain’s Olympic hopes, in a tight finish. Merriman’s time, a new British record, was 29min I.Bsec. The Olympic qualifying standard time is 29min 40sec. Bogey’s time easily beat the French national record and set a new best time for the matches between France and Britain. He and Merriman ran the last lap stride for stride, the Frenchman shaking off determined efforts by the Welshman to overtake him. Smith Fails To Qualify D. Smith, the giant New Zealander, failed in his bid to equal the Olympic qualifying standard time for 800 metres. Smith had a time of Imin 51.8 sec against the Olympic standard of Imin 49.25ec. The New Zealander made his effort 300 yards from home but began to fade and drop back in the seven-man field. He came again gallantly in the straight and was only just beaten into third place behind the British runners. P. Kilford and J. Wenk. The three passed the finishing line almost together and were given the same time.
