Trotting CADUCEUS WINS

Record For Track (N.Z Pres* Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 29. Caduceus scored his first North American victory tonight. The New Zealand pacer, now leased to an American owner, showed all his old finishing power in winning the 25,000 dollars National Handicap Pace at Yonkers Raceway. Caduceus broke the track record for 10 furlongs clocking 2min 32 l-ssec. The old mark was a full second slower. Caduceus, which was driven by Bill Haughton, won by a neck from Victory Dinamic with Tar Boy third. Caduceus started a 5/2 second favourite to Tar Boy. The little bay remained to race in the United States after the International pace series. Haughton, America’s perennial leading money-winning driver, drove excellently. Tar Boy was in front until nearing the final turn when Bye Bye Byrd moved up to challenge. At this point Caduceus was running fourth. Haughton then made a move and the nine-year-old dashed past the leaders Lx the stretch and held off Victory Dinamic to win well. Training Methods Revised training methods had brought Caduceus back to his best form, the trainer-driver, Haughton, said. Haughton has been handling Caduceus for Mr Julie Wilsker, who leased him from Mr Dudley Moore. “He’s a fine racehorse,” Haughton said. “He was tired when I first got him, so I changed his training methods frojn those he’d been accustomed to. Instead of galloping him every day, I worked him once a week. I sent him through three heats, instead of the four we usually give our horses. “He doesn’t like to go a slow 2min 50sec mile, so rd give him a 2min 25sec or 2min 30sec trip, then two others in about 2min 15 sec. It worked welL” Caduceus is expected to be entered in feature races at the next season at Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island, New York.
