NOISY EXHAUSTS ON VEHICLES
Tighter Regulation Sought
“A man or youth who knows how to put his foot down the right way can make an awful lot of noise even though the vehicle passes a warrant-of-fltness muffler
test,” said the president of the South Island Motor Union (Mr G. W. Ferens) at a meeting of the executive yesterday. He was speaking on a proposal (adopted by the union) that stiffer regulations should be brought down to cover noisy motor vehicles. All but the most blatant offenders could quite fairly get a normal muffler passed in a warrant of fitness test, Mr Ferens said. The noise, in fact, was not excessive under the conditions of test, but a high-powered car, a motorcycle, or even a power-cycle could make a “terrific racket” when accelerating hard. Many people complained most bitterly about the scream of power-cycles, especially at night when there was little other noise. Other members agreed that representations should be made for stiffer tests.
