BIG BLAZE IN STATION
Goods, Equipment Lost
(Neu> Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, July 29.* The Feilding railway station was almost gutted by a fire which swept through the wooden building shortly after eight o’clock this morning. The blaze destroyed thousands of pounds worth of signalling equipment besides a quantity of goods in the parcels office. A pup, waiting collection by its owner, perished in the flames before it could be rescued. The fire destroyed the parcels office, stationmaster’s office, the general control room, the ticket office, and a lunch room. The only part of the building to escape damage was the waitingroom and women’s rest room at the northern end of the station. When two machines from the Feilding Fire Brigade arrived the fire had a strong hold and flames were shooting out both the front and back of the structure. Within half an hour the blaze was under control.
