Elliott, "easily the World's greatest runner of a mile,” was the only Australian track and field athlete likely to win a fold medal at the Rome Olympics, the former champion miler. J. Landy. said last Landy said that even Elliott would be running under a handicap. TO win at Rome out of season would be like giving 20yds or 30yds start to the best milers'in the world. Australia’s previously invincible women would not be favoured to win at Rome, Landy said. The Russian and American women had made tremendous advances in recent months and* with conditions favouring them, they would give very strong opposition to Australian girls.
