Town Hall Site
Sir, —Latimer square is the only suitable site with its spacious grounds giving a dignified and gracious appearance. I don't think a modern structure would suit our old English town with its beautiful cathedral and grounds, gardens, etc. A concert chamber would, I think, be a suitable addition to the hall for local recitals. Cambridge terrace would be a very congested area, and not one to show a large building off to advantage. I think it would have to be built on a large and spacious area to look majestic.— Yours, etc.. (Mrs) L M. 1. HULSE. July 22, 1960.
Sir,—Some time ago we had the ball at our toes with a large number of workers enthusiastically gathering in funds and stirring up interest in the town hall
project. The widespread desire to provide this worthy focal point for the city's many and growing activities is as strong as ever, but we are now bogged down and enthusiasm has been allowed to wane. Could we not have a monster citizens’ meeting open to everybody, and to include representatives of every available body where suggestions can be pooled, contentious matters settled, and the enthusiasm and organisation revived? Could we not even call for nominations of purposeful people for the purpose of forming a fighting committee? With evidence all around us of Christchurch being on the up-grade, let us gather up our resources and get on with this overdue job.— Yours, etc., KIWI. July 21, 1960.
