Fish-Liver Poisoning
Sir,—As a former -Chatham Islander, I recollect being pretty sick after eating groper and a little of the groper’s liver. Fortunately, not liking the oily liver, I did not eat much of it. Others dining on groper and its liver suffered worse than I did. This was in the days when vitamins were not generally known. The cause of the indisposition at that time was put down to the groper, which had been left out all night, being poisoned by the moonlight. From my experience I would suggest that about half an ounce of groper liver would be sufficient for a week and enough to supply any vitamin A and E deficiency.— Yours, etc., EX-WAITANGI RESIDENT. July 21, 1960.
