WOMEN SWIMMERS SUSPENDED
Action By Olympic Coach (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) TOWNSVILLE, July 21 The Olympic swimming coach H. Gallagher, has suspended two women swimmers from his training squad. They are the captain of the women’s team, the back-stroke swimmer, Gergaynia Beckett, of Sydney, and the Victorian freestyle swimmer, Alva Colquhoun. He said he would not take the swimmers back in any circumstances. Gallagher's action was fully supported by the Olympic team manager, Mr R. Pegram, who said that Gallagher had taken the action when the girls refused to "knuckle down” to training. Mr Pegram will speak to both girls on their attitude. The two swimmers will be warned that If they do not improve on present performances, they will most likely be dropped from the team. Mr Pegram said he hoped that a conference between Gallagher, the two girls and himself would “smooth the matter.”
Miss Beckett and Miss Colquhoun are still official members of the Olympic team. Their exclusion from Gallagher’s squad will have no bearing on their final selection.
