Lawn Tennis DAVIS CUP TIE STARTS TODAY
N.Z. Match Against Venezuela (NZ>. Press Association—Copyright) CARACAS (Venezuela), July 21. The New Zealand Davis Cup team. M. Otway and L. -Gerrard, began practice matches yesterday in preparation fox New Zealand’s American Zone tie with Venezuela this week-end. The first singles matches will be played on Friday. The visitors will face the Venezuelan national champion. I. Pimentel, and M. Gambus. a newcomer to international tennis The New Zealanders won then first round match against the West Indies at Port of Spain Trinidad, last week-end without losing a match. A decision on the Venezuelan Tennis Federation’s proposal to play the matches at night to attract bigger gates is expected when the teams and tennis officials meet to make the draw for the tie. New Zealand is unlikely to agree to the proposal The matches will be played on the Altamira Tennis Club’s concrete courts. Previous reports said clay courts would be used.
Venezuela did not compete tn the Davis Cup competition last year because Pimentel was sick.
