Rugby In 1962 Empire Games
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, July 20. Leading New South Wales Rugby Union officials will press for the introduction of the code at the 1962 Empire Games in Perth. Western Australia, the Sydney "Dally Mirror” said today. Those behind the move claim Rugby is the only truly Commonwealth football.
The paper said: "The New South Wales executive will discuss the proposal next Monday night. The plan is for the competing nations to meet in various capital cities before the games, with the final to be played in Perth.” "I feel certain other Rugby countries would support any moves we make,” the N.S.W. R.U. secretary. Mr F. Cooper, said today. “After all, Rugby was once a feature attraction at the Olympic Games.” The N.S.W. British Commonwealth Games Association secretary, Mr S. Grange, said he was in favour of the proposal, but predicted strong opposition. “The tendency in Empire and Olympic Games these days is to cut down on team sports, because of the tremendous accommodation problems.” Mr Grange explained. “I am a Rugby follower, but 1 can see the soccer people pushing their claims just as strongly.”
