LAWN TENNIS UPSET IN MEN’S DOUBLES

First British Pair In Semi-Finals Since 1939 (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 30. For the first time since 1939 there will be an all-British pair in the men’s doubles .semi-finals at Wimbledon. ' R. Wilson and M. Davies reached that stage yesterday when they defeated what is considered the best doubles pair in the world, N. Fraser and R. Emerson, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3.

The first four sets were played on Tuesday night, when failing light held up the match until yesterday. Then the British couple Had to wait almost another five hours until after Fraser’s victorious singles semi-final before they could get at the Australians in a “death or glory" last set. The first 10 minutes on the court virtually decided the issue. Davies and Wilson combined brilliantly and out-smarted the top seeds at every move. They went to 3-0 and then 4-1 before Fraser and Emerson could really settle. The Australians lost at 6-3, and it was all over. Australian Men’s Singles The singles final on Friday will once again be an all-Australian contest. Fraser beat Krishnan and R. Laver beat X- Pietrangeli in the semi-final. Pietrangeli was beaten, 4-6, 6-3. 8-10, 6-2, 6-4, by Laver; Krishnan was swamped, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, by Fraser. For the first time on record, two left-handers survived to fi_ght for the premier title in tennis. Although the winners’ success was deserved, the semi-finals were a sad disappointment to the crowd. The Laver-Pietrangeli match fell far enough below expectations, but seldom has there been such a stony silence as that which hung over the centre court terraces as 26-year-old Fraser trounced the out-of-touch Krishnan. Laver, the red-haired 21-year-old Australian champion from Rockhampton, Queensland, will be playing his second successive Wimbledon final. Last year he got there against the odds to be beaten by A. Olmedo. In January this year, he beat Fraser for the Australian title in five sets after saving a match point. The Laver-Pietrangeli match generated more excitement, largely because it fluctuated so freely, but with a gusty wind swirling around the court play never reached semi-final standard.

Pietrangeli, “the touch" player, was probably the more affected but neither served with much certainty. Pietrangeli netted enough

volleys to x give him nightipares and Laver was a prodigal waster on the early chances which the Italian’s short lobs gave him. The centre court crowd did not really find voice until the twilight when the young Australian doubles pair, R. Hewitt and M. Mulligan, determinedly defeated the Americans, B. Mackay and R. Holmberg, in an entertaining match. In the following results an asterisk denotes a seeded player: Men’s Singles Semi-finals.—*N. A. Fraser (Australia) beat *R. Krishnan (India). 6- 6-2, 6-2; *R.
