Demand For Two-Man Bus Crews Refused
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 23. Today’s five-hour conference betwen representatives of the Tramways Workers’ Union and the Public Passenger Transport Association on the union’s demands for two-man bus operation broke up without result.
The union secretary (Mr P. A. Hansen) said tonight the matter would now be referred back to the national executive to decide on future action. He would not comment on the discussions.
The conference was called at the suggestion of the Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) after the union had threatened a stoppage of work if their demands were not considered. The chairman of the meeting. Mr M. N. Manthel (Wellington City Council), representing the association, said the conferen :e did not get “anywhere” though the association did make a compromise offer, decided unanimously by association delegates during an adjournment. The formula offered said categorically that the association would not accept two-man operation of buses or trolley buses. “However.” it continued, “if the union wishes to go further with the question of two-man operation then the question should be referred to the Arbitration Court as an Industrial matter. “If this offer be unacceptable to the employees, we will not willingly accept any other tribunal to decide this question, but we will agree to: “(a) Make a drive for the sale of concession cards and,
“(b) Employ ticket-sellers on the ground where the traffic and
operating conditions justify it, in order to assist the operator and reduce loading time. “We are. at all times, willing to improve operating conditions of our employees and vehicleusers.’’
Mr Manthel said the union rejected the offer, saying that, at the least, they wanted a tribunal under an independent chairman to consider two-man operation.
