(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 23. Two beasts were killed when an explosion caused a mob of cattle to stampede on the Old Motu road near Opotiki today. They were travelling through steep bush country when two charges set off by a Ministry of Works gang were detonated. The head of the mob had just reached the corner where the charges were laid when the explosion occurred The mob panicked and 60 beasts plunged off the road. They went down a steep face to a rock gully more than 100 ft below Two were killed. Warnine notices had been posted on the road. The Ministry of Works men were not aware of the approaching cattle until after the fuses had been lit. It would have been too dangerous to attempt to disarm the charges.
