Mr Holyoake’s Address

Sir,—“B Constant” wishes to be fed facts. His hunger is understandable; Mr Holyoake has starved him. For instance, Mr Holyoake promises tax reduction but he does not indicate because of the inevitable reduction in revenue where cuts will be made. (Public works? Education vote? Social Security benefits?) On actual performance, we think of ■the time when five-year-olds were barred from school and trained teachers (with thousands of others) walked the streets looking for jobs. No-one had to look for a job in 1958. “Sundown" says there is nothing to learn from Labour. Perhaps so, if there is inability to learn. In reality, Labour has shown how to really reduce taxation yet maintain public works, to ease . working people’s burden, by increasing tax exemptions, to keep promises in adverse circumstances. There’s plenty more, too.—Yours, etc., A. F. PALMER. Waimate, June 16, 1960.
