Town Hall Site
Si r —“ Practical Matters” is unpractical. He refers to a “beautiful building” on the library site. This, presumably, is the Canterbury Club. This is an old wooden building. Then he states that the site is well organised. This does not seem true, for the area is a mixture of parking and other vacant sites, old wooden houses, the former St. Elmo flats, and the library. He says that the site is a “presentable part of the
city.” Surely this is a good reason for erecting a town hall on it. Finally he advocates erecting the town hall on the present municipal buildings site. This is his most unpractical point. First, the parking is bad enough now in this vicinity. A civic centre here would make it a great /leal worse. Second, it would mean demolishing solid buildings. And third, it would affect many more owners whose livelihood is concerned.— Yours, etc., FQR CHRISTCHURCH. June 20, 1960.
