Equal Incomes
Sir,—ln this letter I stress three points. First, “Equal Incomes” offers a clear-cu* radical, social objective, which to a middle-class democrat will appear ridiculous (“woolly” is Mr Wheeler’s delightful epithet). But middle-class democracy has had its day, and “mass” democracy is already here in the Soviet Union and even more so in the People’s Republic of China. The rest of the-world will follow each ia his own way the Tbad given. Second, the policy of incomes” is the best antidote for the nuclear-suicide threat, which has dogged our steps ever since 1944. Third, we can all co-operate more effectively to realise increasingly the common good by getting rid of one more class distinction —unequal incomes.—Yours, etc., N. M. BELL. June 18, 1960.
