High-Scoring Games Big scoring margins detracted considerably from interest in last evening’s matches in the Canterbury Women's Indoor Basketball competitions Results:— Y-Girls 20. Taxes B 14; Rebels 40. Rex 11; Overlanders 40. Taxes 13: Army 22. Teachers’ College B 8; Rangiora Rangers 31. Teachers’ College A 15. Rebels v. Rex Poor passing and lack of rebounding by Rex gave the aggressive Rebels team every opportunity to store. Good positional play bv H. Johnson (Rebels) culminated tn several scoring baskets by S. Andrews. Both teams played a zone defence and in the first spell scoring was slow, but good ball control gave Rebels two quick baskets. Rebels were on top through good tactical play and gained several points to establish a 16-point lead. Rex changed its defence to a man-to-man one. but lack of experience told and Rebels made many quick breaks to score 40 points. Main scorers for Rebels were S. Andrews (12) and H. Johnson (11). Overlanders v. Taxes Overlanders scored six baskets before Taxes made an attempt to score. Lack of drive by the Taxes team gave toe experienced Overlanders’ side every opportunity to break for the basket. Fart play and controlled ball handling gave Overlanders a well-deserved lead Accurate shooting by P. Hillier was the feature of play in the first spell, which ended with the score at 28-5 tn Overlanders’ favour. At the beginning of the second spell Taxes tightened its defence but good set shooting by L. FttzGeraid. and aggressive rebounding by P. Hillier, widened Taxes zonal defence until it almost collapsed. T. Wall (Taxes) managed to hold the team together and several baskets from her accurate shoots gave new vigour to her team. Taxes made several attempts to score through many positional mistakes by Overlanders. but the more exnerienced Overlanders team was always on top. Rangier* Rangers v. Teachers’ College A A rebound shot from a penalty opened the score for Rangiora Rangers and a technical foul shot gave Teachers* College one point. Play was tight and many infringements marred play in the opening stages. A good interception by J 7 Morris culminated to a basket for the Rangiora team. Both teams were slow to settle down and after 12 minutes of play the score was only 6 points to 2. Close rebounding by College gave it many opportunities to score, but it failed to find the openings in the loose game of the Rangiora team. At half-time Rangiora led 16-5. When play resumed College was more aggressive and two good shots by Y. Hunter and a rebound shot by A. Blain, gave College heart. The game became brighter. With five minutes of play left in the second spell College had only four players on the court and Ragiora took advantage to establish a welldeserved lead which it held. Tod scorers were:—Rangiora: V Fiedler 12. L. Bonwing 10. J. Lundy 8. Teachers’ College: A. Blair 7.
