Wedding Gift From N.Z.

Sir,—The average humble New Zealander does not habitually find himself gracing the sumptuous board of some courtly English host, so has little opportunity of assessing the relative merits, as table decoration, of silver kiwis, pheasants, etc. May we not, thereaccept the assurance of your more privileged correspondents that, even in such distinguished company as cut glass and candelabra, the kiwi, despite his

somewhat deferential attitude, has no cause to feel ashamed? The further assurance that he can provide a useful topic of dinnertable conversation (*Do tell me. Sir Charles, is* that a dodo?") should do much to dispel any doubt as to the suitability ol this gift; far better, for example, than a replica of the Ranfurly Shield, or a pair of Don Clarke’s football boots.—Yours, etc, PASS THE PORT. Jun? 2, 1960.

Sir,—The gift to Princess Margaret is well-chosen and in excellent taste. These beautifully modelled birds are very lovely set on a dinner table with fine Slass and silver and exquisite lace mats. As a child I often stayed in a home where two silver peacocks were used on “special occasions." I sometimes use a fine china duck and five little ducklings on an oval mirror to add attraction to my dinner table. !■ am sure Princess Margaret will be delighted with New Zealand's gift.—Yours, etc., JUST A SALESWOMAN. June 1, 1960.
