University Motto And Arms

Sir,—The proposed university motto, “Et Veritas Liberabit Vos,” is open to the objection that it makes a statement concerning the truth before this has

been found. Suppose our inquiries establish that we are automata? With a motto such as this, we should then suffer the additional indignity of being ridiculous automa! But seriously, in our search for truth, we must be honestly prepared to accept it whatever its nature proves to be. A man who stipulates that the truth must satisfy certain non-rational conditions (e.g., that, it shall set us free) would be happier at a theological college. “Efisce veritatem petere” is a good honest commandment, in sympathy with the spirit of this scientific age, and accordingly gets my vote.—Yours, etc, DEREK LAWDEN. June 2, 1960. Sir,—As an alternative to St. John, 8: 32, may I suggest I Esdras, 4:41, “Magna est veritas et praevalebit” (using the more quoted future tense rather than the present)? “Mighty is truth and it will prevail" over the mendacity and credulity at men. —Yours, etc, MUS. June 2, 1960.
