ADMSSION TO HIGH SCHOOLS
Policy Statements
Wanted
All high schools under the Christchurch Post - primary Schools’ Council should jointly issue a statement on the criteria for admission used at each, said Dr. C. D. Ellyett at a meeting of the council last evening.
Riccarton and Burnside uad already published the terms on which pupils would be accepted and similar statements by the others would be helpful to parents faced with the problems of enrolling pupils in June, Dr Ellyett said. The schools might also list the courses they offered He had lately heard of one school which he would have expected to offer a commercial course; but it did not The number of places available in each course might also be helpful. The chairman (Mr W. J. Cartwright) said information on courses was available in the prespectuses issued by schools. Criteria for acceptance of enrolments were another matter.
The principals of the council’s high schools and of the Christchurch Technical College and the Lincoln High School had been holding meetings about the problems of enrolments and they would soon issue a public statement The principals had reached a considerable measure of agreement on how they would handle enrolments; but he did not think their statement would go so far as to list the criteria for acceptance at each school. "However I believe the statement will give parents a good deal more confidence," said Mr Cartwright. Dr. Ellyett agreed that discussion of his suggestion be held over pending publication of the principals’ statement.
