More Butter In Store

(New Zealand Press Association) LONDON, March 31. The total quantity of butter held in the United-Kingdom cold stores was 40,200 tons on March 18, the latest figure available, according to the Commonwealth Economic Committee. This is 1000 tons more than during the peak of March last year, but 30,500 tons less than during the peak of March, 1958. Rather more than half of the butter in cold stores today is New Zealand and the remainder mainly Australian. Continental butter rarely goes Jnto British cold stores.

It is estimated that new supplies of butter to Britain during 1960 from all sources including home production, will be much the same as during 1958. In 1958 they were 452,000 tons and tn 1959 they were 415,000 tons, it is expected they might be around 450,000 tons this year. New Zealand is expected to send about 20,000 tons less this year due to lower production, the switch to cheese production and other markets.

British home production for 1960 is estimated at around 30,000 tons compared wtih 13.800 tons last year. No estimate of continental imports is available since the spring flush just beginning, and much depends on the weather.
