AIRMEN DOWN ON ICE

Rescue Attempt Delayed By Fog

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 20. Fog has prevented the R.N.Z.A.F. Auster from picking up the two uninjured pilots of the wrecked R.N.Z.A.F. Beaver in the Antarctic. The Auster flew from Scott Base to the Beardmore glacier depot where the aircraft was grounded by the weather. Earlier today an attempt was made by a United States Navy Dakota to pick up the two men. Squadron Leader L. C. Jeffs and Flight Lieutenant P. R. Rule, but it failed because the rough landing field marked out by the two airmen was found unsuitable. Tomorrow the Auster will try to land on the same airfield.

The Auster can only seat one passenger at a time and two flights will be necessary to take the men back to the Beardmore depot where they will be picked up later by a Dakota.
