Table Tennis SIXTH-ROUND MATCHES

Miss Williamson

Plays

The sixth round of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association's summer competition was played last evening alter a break of four weeks for the holiday period. The two leading teams, Avon and Avonside, retained their unbeaten status with wins over Eagles and Lichfield respectively. Other teams which won their sixthround matches were University 11, Wallabies, Linwood, and Selwyn. Main interest in the match between Avon and Eagles centred on the play of Miss J. Williamson, the former national champion, who has just returned from three years of playing and coaching in Europe. Miss Williamson, who is probably lacking in practice in the last few months, was disappointing in her displays against N. B. Radford and K. F. Stevenson. In both these matches, Miss Williamson was well beaten in the third game, after holding her opponents to this stage. Both the Avon players put considerable spin on their shots, and Miss Williamson received few opportunities for counter-hit-ting. The slow tables suited the Avon players better, and Stevenson, especially, worried Miss Williamson with his spin services. Avonside I beat Lichfield by 8 matches to 4, with R. Scott winning his three singles for the Avonside team. Scott and A. Whittaker had a fine match when the two top players met with Scott’s attack proving slightly superior when he won 25-23 in the third game. J. Pierce won two matches for Avonside.

Wallabies, with a stronger team than usual, surprised by beating University I. R. G. Hart again showed very good form to win his three singles matches for University I. beating R L. Hulston comfortably, and winning against both J. M. Gillard and N C. O’Brien, both 22-20, in the third game. J. O. Moen also beat Hulston. but T. M. Minehan (University) was out of touch. Linwood Wins Linwood beat Avonside II in an interesting contest, after the Avonside team had won the first two matches comfortably. The best match in this contest was that between the ,O P Players, B. Kendall (Avonside) and R. L. Sandford (Linwood) lhese two players met when they had each had two victories earlier in the evening, and Sandford’s attacking play slightly bettered Ken°a 11 s defence when he won 21-18 in the third game, J. Reader won two singles for Linwood. Selwyn came from behind in an interesting contest to beat South Biighton by 15 games to 12, with matches equal at 6-all. South Brighwithout W.
