LAWN TENNIS Most Seeded Juniors Win In First Rounds

(Neu, Zeuiano Press Association)

WELLINGTON, January 19.

The seeded players, but for the boys under 19 years No. 4, R. Scherer (Auckland), and the under 17 No. 5, B. Taylor (Wellington), survived a windswept opening to the New Zealand junior tennis championships at Mitchell Park, Lower Hutt, today. Scherer’s elimination was a gain to Wellington as a young and virtually unknown local, Thomas McDonald, beat him heavily 6-2, 6-4, in the first round. For Scherer it was a losing battle against the ache of a bone disease which, cured in his tennis arm, is now starting to affect his shoulder.

However, Scherer’s play improved later, and with Miss H. Lockington (Auckland) he convincingly won his under 19 mixed doubles, 6-0, 6-2, against D. Lezard and Miss B, Gotlieb (Wellington).

The fast-hitting Taylor also fell to an unrecognised player. This time it was a steady Hutt Valley boy, W. Wyatt. Wyatt won, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, after a torrid tussle.

The under 19 years title-holder, R. G. Clarke (Wellington) looked impressive in his 6-0, 6-1 victory over C. Reading (Bay of Plenty) in the first round, while his close rival and the top seed, J. B. Souter (Wellington), won, 6-2, 6-2, over A. Crookenden (Waikato).

Auckland’s Miss G. Landells, runner-up last year and now top seed and favourite for the under 19 girls’ crown, beat Miss C. Smillie (Taranaki), 6-3, 6-4. After a bye in the first round, the No. 1 seed for the under 17 boys’ singles, B. Young (Auckland), did not concede a game against D. Hawkes (Wellington), while the top-seeded girl in this age group, Miss E. Cavaye (Hutt Valley), also came through her first match with flying colours. Today’s play included boys’ and girls’ singles in both age groups and some play in mixed doubles.
