RACING Froth Shapes Well In Trentham Trial

"The Press’ Special Service WELLINGTON, January 19. Honours over a mile in training at Trentham today were shared by Gitano, Nulli Secundus and Froth. Gitano and Nulli Secundus are rivals for the Gloaming Stakes, and Froth is a newcomer in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, the first leg of the double on the middle day of the Wellington summer meeting on Saturday.

Over shorter distances Gay Defoe, Fairassan, Lord Sasanof and Minstrel Beau also enhanced their prospects this week with smart efforts.

For a hack, Libel did well over a mile and. without exerting himself, Sol d’Or coped with Mireusonta over seven furlongs.

half-mile in 52 4-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. He was running on over six furlongs on the opening day and may be a dangerous light-weight in the January Handicap. Minglow (W. L. Aitken) and Subtrist (J. R. Dowling) were to have been companions over half a mile, but the latter refused to jump away. Minglow recorded 51 2-ssec, and 37 l-ssec for the final three furlongs. On the two-year-old track, which was also fast, Fine Gold (W. T Day) ran on strongly to shade Ruscoe (W. A. Smith) at the end of half a mile in 52 3-ssec, the final three furlongs taking 38 4-ssec. Fine Gold will be suited by the distance of the Nursery Handicap.

Galloping was divided between the plough and the trial grass Both were fast, but the horses were hampered from the halfmile by a strong south-west wind. On the trial grass, Nulli Secundus (W. A. Smith), with an advantage in weight, was a length in front of Gitano (J. H. Hely) at the end of a mile. The last seven furlongs took Imin 29sec, the four 51sec and the last three 37 3-ssec. Gitano and Nulli Secundus had a good tussle in the Great Northern Derby, finishing first and second respectively and they look ready to fight another keen contest in the Gloaming os Gay Defoe (W. L. Aitken) recorded the best half-mile when he left the distance behind in 49 2-ssec, the last three furlongs taking 37sec. Gay Defoe was an unlucky runner in the Anniversary Handicap on the first day. beginning badly, being well back to the straight etrance and finishing fast for fifth. He should be an improver in the January Handicap on Satuday. Three Lengths Lead

Fair Filou is a doubtful runner in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap if the track remains firm.

Fairassan (W. A. Smith) was three lengths in front of Vae Victis (J. J. Glen) after running half a mile in 50sec, coming from the three furlongs in 36 l-ssec. Fairassan, which has raced well at Trentham previously, has been racing consistently, having been placed in five of his seven starts this season. At his last attempt he was runner-up to Jim’s Count in the Goldfields Cup at Thames. He is to have his first start at the meeting in the January Handicap. A two-year-old, Vae Victis showed promise early in the season, but has not fulfilled it in recent starts.

Lord Sasanof <W. J. Mudford) and Disorder (K. A. Nuttall) jumped away from the six furlongs together, but had little pace on till the half-mile. Disorder took little interest in his work and was not persevered with over the final two furlongs. Lord Sasanof finished well in front and recorded 50 l-ssec for the last half-mile, taking 36sec for the final three furlongs. He has thrived at Trentham and though he has shown his best form over a mile and on easier ground he should add interest to the Gloaming Stakes. Disorder is a newcomer in the Ruapehu Hack Handicap. He has recent form in the south. Minstrel Beau (C. H. Mackie) completed half a mile brilliantly in 49 3-ssec, the final three furlongs in 36sec. He left hack ranks on a winning note at Ellerslie and is to make his opencompany debut in the Metropolitan Handicap. He has a good turn of pace, but is unfavourably drawn on Saturday. Resolute Finish

A resolute finish gained Sol d’Or’ (G. F. Hughes) a two-length advantage on Mireusonta (D. Downey) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec, the last four in 52 4-ssec and the final three in 39sec.

It was the way Sol d’Or completed his task rather than the times he recorded that impressed. He has freshened well since he finished third in the Great Northern Derby and should be a force to contend with in the Gloaming Stakes. Mireusonta has yet to bridge the gap to open company, but he has raced promisingly lately and mav be capable of an upset in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. Taking her time in the first furlong, Kirklea (W. A. Smith) ran half a mile in 52 3-ssec. She increased her pace from the three furlongs to record 37 2-ssec. Goudvink (J. J. Dixon) was stopping at the end of five furlongs after going fast in the early stages. She came from the half-mile in 52 l-ssec, and from the three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. A Metropolitan Handicap contender, she is a previous winner at Trentham and showed improvement on recent efforts when she finished fourth at Hawke’s Bay. Froth Keen

On the plough Froth (C. A. Bowry) worked keenly in the early stages of a mile. She ran the last seven furlongs in Imin 29sec, but was stopping in the final two furlongs to record 52 3-ssec for the last half-mile, and 39 2-ssec for the final three furlongs. It is a trait of Froth's to gallop leisurely in the final stages of her work. She has not raced since she finished a close second to Arbonne in the Nathans’ Memorial Handicap on the final day of the Auckland meeting. At her preceding start she was third in the Auckland Cup and on those performances she warrants support on “Saturday. Looking all the better for his race in the Te Marua Highweight, in which he finished a good second. Libel <W. T. Day) ran a mile in lmin 45 2-ssec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 31sec, four in 51 3-ssec, and final three in 37sec. He joined the disappointing Sir Gallant (J. J Dixon) at the half-mile, and although Sir Gallant had an advantage at the finish Libel was doing the better. Motueka (C. A. Bowry) did a round of pacework, increasing speed over the final three in 40 2-ssec. He will be better suited by the distance of the Wellington Racing Club Handicap than the two miles of the Wellington Cup. Cheyenne Cheyenne (C. H. Mackie) and Jimmy Hill (J. J. Glen) were companions over half a mile in 51 4-ssec, the final three furlongs taking 36 4-ssec. Warwick (W. L. Aitken) ran a sound seven furlongs in lmin 30 ’ !-ssec, easing ove. the last
