Bout Declared “No Contest”
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 18.
After four rounds of booing, catcalls, whistles and slow handclaps from the audience the scheduled eight-round heavy-weight fight between Kitione Lave (Tonga) and Joey Armstrong (Ghana) was declared a non-contest at Newcastle tonight. The referee (Mr T. Watson) decided that neither boxer was trying. The audience showed its approval by cheering the referee as he left the ring (almost unprecedented in Newcastle) and booing the fighters. During the four rounds neither man struck a really telling blow though they were at close quarters all the time.
