U.K. FRIGATE IN AUCKLAND
“N.Z. Is Return To Civilisation”
(New Zeaiana Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 12.
“New Zealand is a return to civilisation for us,” said a young officer aboard the British frigate, H.M.S. St. Bride’s Bay, which arrived in Auckland today. “It is a pleasant change from hot, sticky, humid weather, and it gives us a chance to meet our own people again,” he said. The St. Bride's Bay has been on Far East station since 1949. Her present commission, the eighth, will end in July, when the ship’s company will be flown back to the United Kingdom.
The frigate has operated mainly around Hong Kong and Singapore.
Visits to New Zealand and Australia give the men of the St. Bride’s Bay a lift in morale, as there is apparently considerable indifference to the Navy among Europeans in the Far East, and the rise of nationalism among the Asian races has not helped relations between the population and the service.
“It might not seem very important, but it’s surprising the difference a visit like this can make,” said a member of the ship’s company. The St. Bride’s Bay will leave for Wellington on January 25.
