COMPLICITY IN ABORTION
Accused Admits Aiding Girl
(New Zeaiana Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 12.
A young man pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland today to a charge of aiding and abetting a former girl friend in the commission of an offence of procuring an abortion. He was remanded in custody for a week for sentence by Mr F. McCarthy, S.M. The Magistrate allowed interim suppression of accused’s name and forbade publication of any material which might disclose the name of the girl who, the Court was told, had died as the result of the illegal operation. The abortionist was still at large, the police prosecutor (Mr G. A. Dellow) said.
Mr J. G. Jamieson, counsel for the accused, said the young man was not responsible for the girl’s pregnancy. They had kept company for some years and then gone their separate ways. When she learned of her condition she decided on her course of conduct and turned to him for help. Accused's motives were altruistic. He had done wrong, but this was out of sympathy. The Magistrate agreed that the case was far from usual.
