WOMEN FOR ANTARCTIC
Four Australian Scientists (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, December 4. Four women scientists will travel to the Australian Antarctic territory of Macquarie Island this month, to study Antarctic plants and animals. After spending about two weeks on the island, they will return with this year’s Macquarie base party. The Minister of External Affairs (Mr Richard Casey) said the idea of women scientists doing Antarctic research was not novel. A number of countries had been considering including women scientific workers in their expeditions. Miss Hope McPherson, of the National Museum of Victoria, said in Melbourne she was not frightened of the tough conditions. “It might be different if we were there for a year,” she said.
