MOTOR ASSEMBLY IN N.Z.
Sharp Drop Last Year
The output of New Zealand motor assembly works declined sharply last year as a result of the restriction of imports of motor vehicle units for assembly. Figures released by the Department of Statistics show that although the number of commercial vehicles assembled showed a substantial increase, the assembly of cars fell from 36,168 in 1957-58 to 26,103 in 1958-59.
The average number of persons engaged in the industry during 1958-59 fell by 703, or 21.9 per cent., while overtime hours worked by wage earners declined by 41.3 per cent. The value of all units assembled in 1958-59 was approximately £24 million and the value added, or net output, was £5.3 million, 17.1 per cent, lower than in the previous year.
