DINGHY SUNK BY SHARK

Man Scrambles To Safety (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 4. A 14ft mako shark yesterday attacked and bit a six-inch chunk from a 9ft dinghy in which Mr Don Ashton, a commercial fisherman, was sitting. Mr Ashton was fishing off Moko Hinau Island, 28 miles from Leigh. The dinghy was about 12 feet from the launch Rata when the shark took seven snapper from a line. The shark charged the dinghy, lifting it from the water. It then bit a six-inch chunk from the craft and perforated the hull in five places with its teeth. Mr Ashton was just able to scramble on to the launch before the dinghy sank. “That was the biggest mako I’ve seen and the most vicious,” said Mr Ashton, who has been fishing all his life. The shark escaped.
