DAY MEETINGS OF COUNCIL
Two Members May Resign (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. Two newly-elected members of the Howick Borough Council may resign to fight a by-election over a council decision to hold its meetings during the day. Because of their jobs, Mr George McKinnon, an industrial safety officer, and Mr Nelson Blake, a school teacher, are unable to attend day meetings. The new council at its first meeting voted for day meetings. The previous council met during the day. The meeting rejected an amendment moved by Mr McKinnon for night meetings. Mr Blake supported him. > Mr Blake told the meeting that they would have to go to a higher authority over the question.
Mr McKinnon said today it appeared they had these alternatives:—Seek a court injunction; resign and fight a by-election on the question; allow day meetings to proceed and possibly forfeit their seats because of their absence; or appeal to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The two men comprise a third of the council, which has six members, and the Mayor (Mr W A. Stevenson).
Mr McKinnon said he thought Mr Stevenson an excellent Mayor, and would support him on most things. “But I can’t support him on this,” he said.
