Local Elections

Sir, —“Far Back Dan” should go back a bit farther and get his facts right. He should remember that it was the Labour Party who introduced the Social Security Act, and it would otherwise not be in operation today. When the act was passed by the Labour Government it was called by Michael Savage applied Christianity, while Mr Holland called it applied lunacy and said they would not operate it when and if they again came to power. However, they were afraid to do otherwise, and now say they will never change it. Every humanitarian act on the Statute Book today was placed there by Labour. —Yours, etc., B. O’CONNOR. December 1, 1959. [Mr O’Connor’s quotation of Mr Holland is inaccurate because it is incomplete. The Hansard report of the debate on the Social Security Bill on August 25. 1938, shows that Mr Holland indicated that he approved and believed in the aim of social security, but wished to be shown, before he could vote for the proposals in the bill, that they were financially secure. "... I say that it is applied lunacy to commit oneself to expenditure before the requisite in-, come is reasonably assured.” —Ed.. “The Press.”]
