Women Jurors
Sir,—Replying to “JusticeLiberty,” centuries ago the patriarchial system, based on the power of the father, was the accepted pattern of community living. The Roman law of the ancient world carried this tradition of male supremacy westward over Europe and it became the basis of our legal system. With changes of cultures bringing difference in concepts of living, this has become outmoded. Today women expect to accept responsibility in affairs of justice related to women. Regarding the liberty for which men fought and died, so, too, did business and professional women join these ranks in both service and sacrifice. Women have earned the right to ask the Government for full participation in our New Zealand democratic way of life.—Yours, etc., (Miss) F. JEAN SEWELL, President, Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club. November 28, 1959.
