Results Of Third Round
Matches were close in the third round of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s first grade summer competition. Three teams, Avon. Selwyn and Avonside I, maintained their unbeaten records. Lichfield had its first loss, to South Brighton, and other winners were University I and Wallabies.
Avon beat University II by 8 matches to 4 in a meeting of two Of the strongest teams. For Avon. N. B. Radford was again in good form, and won three singles. D. Hill and D. D. M. Stewart each won two singles matches for University 11. the latter losing to Radford, 21-19, in the third game of their match. Avon won three doubles matches very narrowly. Selwyn had a surprisingly easy win over Star. The score was 9-3. H. P. Holt and C. B. Lockhart won their three singles matches for Selwyn. Holt, like Radford, has won his nine singles matches so far this season. G. Makinson and D. B. Reid each won one singles for Star. Avonside I beat Avonside II by the narrowest of margins, winning by 16 games to 15 after the contest had been tied at six matches each. B. Kendal] was in good form for Avonside II to win his three singles matches Avonside II had to win the last doubles match in two games to force a draw, but the Avonside I pair of R. Scott and J. Pierce took the first game to give victory to their team. South Brighton beat Lichfield 17 games to 14, again with six matches each. R. T. Prisk was mainly responsible for Lichfield’s achieving six matches, as he won his three singles, and one of his two doubles. A. Alabaster and R. Nesbitt each won two singles for South Brighton. J. Kyle, playing his first match of the season for Linwood, won his three singles matches to help his team to a 7-5 victory over Wallabies. R. L. Sanford won two singles for the winning team, losing only to J. M. Gillard, 21-18, in the third game of their match. Gillard won two singles for Wallabies.
The easiest win of the evening was that of University I, which beat Eagles by 10 matches to 2. R. G. Hart won his three singles for University and T. M. Minehan and J. O. Moen each won two singles. Points after three rounds are: Avon 6, Selwyn 6. Avonside I 6, University I 4, South Brighton 4, Lichfield 4, University II 2. Wallabies 2. Linwood 2, Eagles 0, Star 0, Avonside II 0.
Results of the third round were: Avon 8, University II 4Selwyn 9, Star 3; Avonside I 16, Avonside II 15; South Brighton 17, Lichfield 14: Linwood 7, Wallabies 5, University I 10, Eagles 2.
