Bookmaker Fined £200

(New Zeatana Press Association) GISBORNE, December 1.

Herbert Joseph Cowan, a storeman, who pleaded guilty to a charge of bookmaking, was convicted and fined £2OO by Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., today. Senior-Sergeant B. H. Constable said that Cowan was married, with a large family. On Saturday the police- visited Cowan’s premises at Wainui road when it was suspected a breach of the Gaming Act was being committed. When questioned Cowan admitted he was bookmaking, but was only in a small way, and acting, for an agent.

At a later interview Cowan admitted he had been operating as an agent for two years. He received a commission of Is 6d in the pound from his principal. On the day he was questioned Cowan had taken £l6B 10s in bets, ranging from 5s to £lO.
