Living Conditions

Sir,—l heavily agree with Mr George Jenks, of New York, in his condemnation of Mr O. L. Sulzburger’s comment regarding conditions in this country. But it is not only Mr Sulzburger who feels that this country should carry more industry and population. Prominent Japanese and British visitors have recently spoken of the excellent conditions here but are also surprised at the sparse population. They suggest we increase our population and lower our living standards. Where is Australia going to market her finished manufactures? It won’t be possible to compete with the new industrial giants, India and China; in fact, hours are too short and wages too high for Australia to compete with any nation. At the present rate of population increase Europe and Asia will be reduced to a starvation level; so let’s keep this a food-producing country.—Yours, etc., J.F. November 18, 1959.
