“Lolita”

Sir, —I read some reviews of this book about 12 months ago. I was not impressed and had no desire to read it. But when a man whose intellectual ability or morals I consider no better than my own tells me I must not read it I see red. In Antarctica I was handed a copy by an American colleague; they are allowed to read it. I did not particularly enjoy the novel but I read quite a few books, including my income tax papers, that I do not enjoy; but that is no reason for stopping my fellow man from reading them. I found the book neither indecent, obscene, nor demoralising.—Yours, etc.,’ . PENGUIN. November 19, 1959.
