Price Control

Sir,—l read with despair your editorial, “Controls on Meat and Fish,” as I have just sold lambs at 36s a head and the prospect for ewes is 10s. Mutton is still being sold at 15s for hindquarters, leaving a gross profit for the butcher of two front quarters and chops, hide, wool and other byproducts. Is this a fair profit? How else than by government controls can the consumer be given the benefit of lower prices for mutton? I found no constructive criticism in your article. Why are the sheep farmers expected to pay for the extra prices for beef? Nor are we all wealthy or able to turn to cattle or wheat. Lower prices to consumers mean larger sales.—Yours, etc., SHEEPFARMER. .November 9, 1959.
